Blue Springs High School Blue Springs, MO Project in the Design Phase Design Concept Award Hollis + Miller Architects 2009 Exhibition of School Planning and Architecture

Blue Springs High School Additions and Renovations

Enhancing Existing Assets Community Environment: Preserve and augment a connection to nature. Maximize leaning opportunities with outdoor learning spaces. Create a flexible gathering space capable of adapting to community needs.

Student Life on Display Community Environment: School and community pride is the driving force behind the new monumental corridor. Main student spine connects (3) buildings binding academics with the extra curricular – students with the community.

Streamline and Modernize Learning Environment: Expand existing program to maximize efficiency and modernize learning tools. Give teachers the space and resources necessary to be successful in an existing environment that isn’t conducive to an optimized learning environment. Preserve the 30 to 50 year old buildings and make them function like new. Re-organize space to group common disciplines together to improve student and teacher communication.

Connection and Inspiring Learning Environment: Provide dynamic and inviting spaces for students to gather. Connect the student’s learning opportunities to the courtyard through daylight and focused vistas. Outdoor classroom and gathering spaces tie directly into the main student circulation spine

Securing the Campus Physical Environment: New campus master plan creates a secure environment for the students that was previously lacking. Students now enter through one of two (2) main paths– both function with secure vestibules. Faculty offices are dispersed throughout the campus in strategic locations to provide a presence in unsupervised areas. Existing student circulation patterns are incorporated into the new courtyard plan.

Connecting the Campus Physical Environment New design connects (5) independent building footprints while maintaining an open campus. School identity in the form of graphics and signage is an integral part of the design. Modified courtyard will provide new opportunities for teachers and the community while efficiently guiding students throughout the campus.

Integrated Design Approach Planning Process: Character Statements were developed to ensure the district’s vision was always the driving force behind the new design. Design team worked bi-weekly with the school and district staff through the design phase to ensure that all available options for the campus master plan had been considered. Throughout these exercises the character statements served as a reminder of the overall goal set by the school and the district.

Following Through Planning Process: The character statements established during the fist collaborative meeting the school and district staff were carried through to the smallest detail. Large format graphics and murals will accent the campus with the community’s values and direction.

Student Entry The new student entry consolidates the eight (8) current arrival points into one (1). The community and school’s vision of a new identity are un-mistakable.

Campus Entry This conceptual rendering of the main entry illustrates the emphasis on daylight and efficient circulation.
