1 Globe Protocol By The ECH2O Academy Junior Class of 2014-2015

2 Cloud and Contrail Protocol Task: Cloud protocol helps us identify which of the ten types of clouds are present and how many of each of the three types of contrails are visible. Procedure: 1.Look at all of the clouds in the sky, in all directions, including directly over head. Be careful not to look directly into the sun. 2.Using the GLOBE cloud chart and definitions, identify the types of clouds that are observed. 3.Check the box on your data for each cloud type observed. Contrails: There are three types of contrails: ●short lived ●persistent spreading ●persistent non- spreading

3 Aerosols Task: To find the optical thickness of the atmosphere, or the amount of light that is not absorbed or scattered by aerosol particles in the air. Procedure: 1.Set the sun photometer to red wave, point it towards the sun, and align the shadow with the dot. Read and record the data. 2.To take the dark reading, cover up the two holes on top of the sun photometer and record. 3.Set the meter to green wave, and repeat first 2 steps. 4.Take at least 3 readings but no more than 5 for each wave for accuracy. Each reading should be within 10% of each other to ensure accuracy. Switch the device to temperature, “T”, and multiply the voltage by 100. Record data on Globe Aerosols sheet.

4 Precipitation Protocol Task: To measure the amount of rain that has been collected by the rain gauge. Measure the pH of the rain. Procedure: 1.Read level of water in rain gauge, the level at the bottom of the meniscus. (make sure your eyes are leveled with the water in the measuring tube) 2.Record the rainfall amount to the nearest one-tenth of a milliliter ●If no water in rain gauge, then report 0.0 mL ●If less than 0.5 mL, then record trace, “T” ●If you spill water before measuring the amount of rain, then record missing water, “M” 1.Pour water into sampling jar and cover it for pH measurement with the multimeter.

5 Thermometer Calibration Task: To calibrate the thermometer. Procedure: 1.Prepare mixture of fresh water and crushed ice with more ice than water 2.Put thermometer into ice bath 3.Let thermometer sit 10-15 min and stir gently 4.Read thermometer (if between -0.5°C and +0.5°C, thermometer is fine) 5.If thermometer is off after calibration, tape on the error so you can make sure to add or subtract extra degrees when recording data. In the field: 1.To record Maximum temperature, press the Max button for air temperature and record data. 2.To record the Minimum temperature, press the Min button for air temperature and record data.

6 Humidity Task: By using a digital hygrometer you will find the relative humidity. Outcome: Students must learn to measure humidity and limit the amount of water vapor which air can hold. They must also gain perspective into why raindrops and snowflakes form and why there is precipitation. In the Field Procedure: 1.Place hygrometer in the instrument shelter. If it’s dry, do not leave hygrometer in the shelter overnight. 2.After 30 minutes or so, read the relative humidity. Record the instrument used. 3.Read current temperature only if your reading is not being taken simultaneously with the daily reading of maximum, minimum, and current temperature. 4.Please return the hygrometer to the classroom, and place it in a dry and secure spot.

7 Ozone Task: Measure the surface ozone concentration. Materials: Ozone test strip, ozone data sheet, guide papers, other instruments Procedure: 1.Place scanner on a steady surface out of direct sunlight 2.Place the unexposed ozone test strip into scanner 3.Slide the ozone strip into the slot on top of scanner, the chemical part should be facing the display. 4.Reading should stop fluctuating after 5-10 seconds. if it fluctuates between 2 numbers, choose the lower of the two readings 5.Record the numbers on the data sheet. Then turn the scanner off. 6.Place the strip in a sealed plastic bag and record time of the reading.
