2. I NTRODUCTION TO MANET MANET is a collection of wireless mobile hosts that form a temporary network without the presence of any centralized administration. The presence of asymmetric links, routing overhead due to the mobile property of nodes, interference phenomenon and the dynamically varying topology of MANETs make the security mechanism implementation difficult. Nodes in a MANET are dynamic as they can connect and disconnect from the network and also change their position in the network without the consent of any authoritative party. Combination of secure message transmission protocol (SMT) and secure routing protocol (SRP) will minimize the detrimental effects of misbehaving nodes.

3. P ROBLEMS WITH THE EXISTING MODELS All the existing models have either failed to capture the evidence of trustworthiness or have introduced additional issues while trying to capture the evidence of trustworthiness. They suffered from recommender bias issues. MANETs are in need of a model that not only defends itself from the recommender’s bias but also contains detailed policies for enhancing security mechanisms and isolating malicious nodes.

4. INTRODUCTION TO SMRTI SMRTI stands for Secure MANET Routing With Trust Intrigue. SMRTI is a detection-reaction approach that has been developed from trust and reputation models. The evidence of trustworthiness is captured in an efficient way by direct interaction with the neighbors, monitoring the interaction between the neighbors and also through recommendations. On analysis of the recommendations, the model may then decide whether or not to forward packets in the network.

5. D ETECTION C OMPONENT Reckoning the behavior of nodes by direct interaction with nodes. This will provide direct reputation rating for that node under evaluation. Reckoning the behavior of nodes by monitoring the interactions of the nodes. This will provide indirect reputation rating for that node under evaluation. Recommended reputation that is gathered by the model based on the analysis of the behavior of nodes along the secured communication path.

6. R EACTION C OMPONENT Reaction component takes input from the detection component. Prior to the start of this phase, behavior of all the nodes that are participating in the network communication would have been evaluated. The reaction component takes care of the decisions that have to be made like whether or not accepting a newly discovered route from a route discovery cycle, whether or not to record a route from a forwarded packet etc. These operations are performed by the reaction component using trust evaluation and trust over reputation phenomenon.

7. T RUST E VALUATION Trust evaluation performed at a node depends on the factors like position of the evaluating node, type of event, and also the context in which the evaluation is invoked. Evaluating node may be source, destination or any other intermediate node. In the context of recording or discarding a route that is obtained from a route discovery or from a forwarded packet, the trust evaluation module computes trust for all the nodes in the route and then evaluates the trust for the route.

8. C ONCLUSION SMRTI approach is the optimum solution available for MANETs till date as it assures proper trust evaluations, secured routing and data forwarding. The model has also been outstandingly ranked in discriminating between benign and malicious nodes. There is a very high possibility for it to be integrated with other secured routing models and fellowship models in the future.
