When John Proctor is attempting to defend his wife Parris attacks Proctor’s argument by insulting him in an attempt to weaken Proctor’s statements because Parris wants to ensure that Elizabeth will be found guilty but Parris has no valid arguments against her.

5. Ad Hominem in The Crucible Example 2
Proctor: How do you call heaven! Whore! Whore! Abigail is a whore! (Act III, p. 220).
Proctor tries to convince the people that Abigail is lying by informing them that Abigail is guilty of fornication. This is ad hominem because Proctor is attacking Abigail’s reputation instead of trying to counter her argument.
