GlueX Collaboration May05 C. Cuevas 1 Topics: Infrastructure Update New Developments EECAD & Modeling Tools Flash ADC VXS – Crates GlueX Electronics Workshop Jefferson Lab 13 May 2005 R. Chris Cuevas Jefferson Lab Physics Division Group Leader -- Fast Electronics

GlueX Collaboration May05 C. Cuevas 2 Infrastructure Update Infrastructure topic introduced at the December 2004 Electronics Workshop ACCURATE DOCUMENTATION IS VITAL Electronics must be treated as an overall Hall ‘system’ Hall D electrical and electronics infrastructure will provide the requirements and documentation for the following: AC Power source & grounding requirements/interface. Equipment rack layout details Fire protection equipment Input/Output cabling diagrams for ALL Detector systems Equipment Cooling Systems Standard instrumentation and HV ‘Crates’ Network gear and cabling

GlueX Collaboration May05 C. Cuevas 3 Infrastructure Infrastructure documentation and ‘rules’ must also be established before installation for: Cabling/interface between platforms/detector sub-systems Other types of hardware that could compromise grounding connections between detector electronics. E.g. ( Gas lines, cooling pipes, cable trays, HVAC equipment ) Infrastructure will have to be flexible to accommodate hardware contingencies, AND provide some margin for spare ‘utilities’. Examples Extra conduit/AC service for rack areas Extra fiber optic trunks to counting room or other locations Signal patch panel [cables] between platforms & counting house

GlueX Collaboration May05 C. Cuevas 4 Infrastructure Summary From the ‘Ground’ up,,, AC power requirements are estimated and will continue to be detailed. Final Front-End electronics designs will determine power requirements. We’ve had meetings with the JLAB civil engineering group and received detailed costs for AC Mains distribution hardware. Good deal of work remains. We have a very good understanding of the costs for ‘Standard’ VME64x crates and power requirements. HV systems for PMT and Wire Chambers will need to be specified soon.

GlueX Collaboration May05 C. Cuevas 5 Infrastructure Summary The Electronics systems infrastructure must provide the foundation for all specifications and ‘rules’ All electronic hardware is documented from the component level to the rack layout configuration diagram. A well defined Infrastructure will certainly help with the long term support and maintenance issues for all electronics including commercial instrumentation and HV systems. Related Thought: Infrastructure documentation ‘database’ will be a rather large and long term project. Resources will have to be considered now. Firmware and algorithm code is one example that covers both infrastructure documentation and the ‘on-line’ group.

GlueX Collaboration May05 C. Cuevas 6 New Developments Recent purchase of new EECAD and simulation tools for circuit schematic simulation and circuit board layout verification has been received. This supports the request/recommendation from previous review panels. JLAB will be able to manage all circuit board schematics and board layout documentation provided by collaborating institutions. It is critical that documentation be accurate, [not necessarily editable], and we MUST establish a method to store and locate firmware files, and parts lists.

GlueX Collaboration May05 C. Cuevas 7 New Developments Flash ADC design is progressing and a bi-weekly ‘engineering’ meeting has helped capture new requirements. Fernando Barbosa and James Proffitt from the electronics group have other design commitments, but understand that the FADC project will become a higher priority. We will count on Ed Jastrzemski’s design contributions, and DAQ support when we get to the stage of high speed readout. The electronics group will develop test software in LabView. We have ordered two VXS crates and will begin some research and prepare for designs using the VXS format for payload and switch modules. New single board Cpu’s, faster backplanes, new test hardware,,,,,,
