3. I. The Gift That Edifies Vs. 1-5 The great emphasis on the use of the gifts is edification – of the individual Christian and the whole church Edification = in the N.T. this refers to the promotion of spiritual growth 3

4. II. Gifts Must Result In Understanding – Vs. 6-12 [9] So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? 4

5. II. Gifts Must Result In Understanding – Vs. 6-12 To speak in a tongue is to speak in a sensible language If the hearers cannot understand the language then no teaching takes place – the hearers are not edified – there is no spiritual growth 5
