3 1. Exposition  Occurs at the beginning of a story.  Introduction to setting, main characters, conflict (main problem).

4 2. Rising Action  Development of conflict; problem intensifies.  Building of tension and suspense.  Development of conflict; problem intensifies.  Building of tension and suspense.

5 3. Climax  Turning point in the story.  Highest point of tension.  Usually, main character comes face-to-face with conflict; main character usually undergoes a change.

7 5. Resolution  Conflict is resolved in some way.  Story comes to an end.
