Welcome and Introduction Please remember to switch off your mobile phones! This PowerPoint will be uploaded to the Y6 section of the school website tomorrow.

Changes to the Y6 National Assessment Tests for 2016 The national curriculum changed in September 2014. If you have older children, you will notice that there is an increased level of challenge in what the children are expected to know now. The new curriculum is designed to ensure children acquire specific knowledge and skills which they can then demonstrate in the Y6 National Assessment Tests. Your children have been taught using the new curriculum aims since September 2014.

Changes to the Y6 National Assessment Tests for 2016 All tests at all levels will be marked onscreen in 2016. Pupils must use a dark pencil or a pen with blue or black ink. Pupils should keep their test scripts in good condition and not fold their answer booklets. When you are preparing pupils for the tests please encourage them to write their answers in the space provided. Responses in the margins or the grey zone will not be marked. The answer booklets include barcodes so each page of a test script is associated with the right pupil. Pupils must not colour in the white space or write on the barcodes. They must not write on or around the lines at the top and bottom of a page.

English Three test papers Reading Spelling Grammar

Reading test The longest test at 1 hour (lots of brain food needed!) Children have one hour to read and answer a range of questions requiring a variety of answer styles; e.g. multiple choice, short line answers and several line answers in which they may be asked to justify an opinion or explain an author’s choice of language.

SPELLING TEST 20 words read out by the administrator. Children have to be able to use spelling strategies to spell unknown words. Some of these strategies will be how to add a massive range of suffixes or a prefixes to a root word. Spelling aims: English aims documentSpelling aims Y5/6 spelling list

Grammar test 45 minute test Questions get increasingly difficult. Focus is on the application of knowledge rather than ticking boxes. Must punctuate even if the question is not about the full stop!

Grammar Activity- your turn! Mr Mitchell loves science and has wanted to go back to teaching it for a long time. He was delighted when he received a class to teach in the new term. 1. Identify the verb form that is in the present perfect. 2. Change it to the past perfect.

If I __________ prime minister, I would give everyone an extra day of holiday a year. Complete the sentence with the subjunctive form. What else are they expected to know?!

Writing Writing is based on assessments throughout the year and a final assessment will be awarded by the teachers based on several pieces of work If your child misses school, they will miss the opportunity to be assessed and will not achieve the level that they deserve. Rubric!

How to Help in English Speaking and listening – the most important! If they see you listening to them, they will listen back! Encourage them to use the correct grammar! “We was, like, innit, going here like, wasn’t we” is not what we want to encourage! Ask your child questions and don’t settle for a grunt back! If they reply with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ ask them to explain further and elaborate – give detail!

How to Help in English Reading Encourage your child to read a variety of books: stories and non-fiction. Ask them questions about what they have read; e.g. What makes you think that? How do you feel about…? Can you explain why…? I wonder why the author chose that word? Use the suggestions in Helping Your Child to Read and Understand

How to Help in English Writing Encourage them to spend a little time each day writing something. Are their sentences punctuated accurately? Is their work grammatically accurate?

Year 6 How can I help my child? Ensure good attendance and punctuality – learning starts at a quarter to nine. If your child is in school every day and ready to learn then we can help them. Encourage your children to do their best. Use revision books. Use revision websites. Ensure they are present between the 9 th – 13 th May 2016. Do not plan holidays in term time.
