8 th Grade Science Overview and Class Procedures Bell Work Go Get Your Clicker & a Small Dry Erase Board Sep 8, 2014 1) If you sit on the right side of the room, go to work station 1 and pick up a textbook. Also go get your clicker 2) If you sit on the left side of the room, go to the tabletop along the purple wall and pick up a textbook. Also go get your clicker 3) Then wait silently for additional instructions. Instructions 1) First click on "View" from the top-menu bar. 2) Then click on "Slide Show" from the drop-down menu. 3) Then use the right-arrow button on your keyboard to advance through this presentation.

Bell Work Date Cause and Effect A famous question goes like this… …Which came first, the chicken or the egg? 1) On your paper write a paragraph explaining your answer to this question. Identify which part is the cause and which part is the effect. SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect

SPI 0807.Inq.1 (Variables and Controls) Today's Plan Plan 1) Explain/Discuss bellwork 2) Emphasize objective(s) (read above and see next slide) 3) Ask about birthdays 4) View cause and effect notes 5) Quick Review Activity at workstations (3-2-1_ 6) (Time permitting) Complete a 5-question assignment WRITE THIS IN YOUR AGENDA! Homework: Bring school supplies, get forms signed and bring them back Science

TCAP Objectives SPI 0807.Inq.4 Cause and Effect Essential Learning 1) TLW draw logical conclusions based on valid cause and effect relationships Essential Question 1) Can I make a conclusion that shows a cause-effect relationship between events?

Silly Thought 05 Two wrongs don't make a right…. …but three rights make a left! Humor

What is cause and effect? Cause and effect refers to a connection or relationship between two actions or events Here is a way to think about this topic:..if you do this one action then this other action will occur -The cause: is the first action or event -The effect: is the resulting consequences Example: In first period a student has a headache and is sleepy. The night before they stayed up late watching a funny TV show until 1:00 A.M.  Identify the cause and effect in this situation. (see next slide) Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Example: In first period a student has a headache and is sleepy. The night before they stayed up late watching a funny TV show until 1:00 A.M.  Identify the cause and effect in this situation. The cause (first action): was staying up late until 1:00 A.M. The effect (resulting consequences): headache & being sleepy Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Reminder:-The cause: is the first action or event Reminder: -The effect: is the resulting consequences Match the following causes and effects on your paper (Just write the number with the letter next to it) CausesEffects (1) Driver presses the gas pedal(A) A chemical reaction occurs (2) Two substances are combined(B) Student earns a 100 on a test (3) Student studies for one hour(C) Car travels fast Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Match the following causes and effects CausesEffects (1) Driver presses the gas pedal(A) A chemical reaction occurs (2) Two substances are combined(B) Student earns a 100 on a test (3) Student studies for one hour(C) Car travels fast Cause: (1) Driver presses the gas pedal Effect: (A) A chemical reaction occurs Cause: (2) Two substances are combined Effect: (C) Car travels fast Cause: (3) Student studies for one hour Effect: (B) Student earns a 100 on a test Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science

Purpose: To find out what went wrong, so we can fix it and avoid it in the future. Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science Cause and Effect Investigations Are Very Common Example: The Hindenburg explosion and crash (1937) Cause: (1) Theory: leaking hydrogen gas ignited by static electricity Effect: With 97 people on board, this airship exploded while trying to land. 36 people died.

Purpose: To find out what went wrong, so we can fix it and avoid it in the future. Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science Cause and Effect Investigations Are Very Common Example: Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion (1986) Cause: (1) O-rings on the rocket booster failed allowing fuel to leak out resulting in a massive explosion. Effect: This spacecraft exploded shortly after liftoff. All seven crewmembers were killed.

Most Famous Causes and Effect Investigation? Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science April 16, 1912

Fact: In 1912 the Titanic was the largest ship in the world. On Apr 10, 1912 she left England with 899 sailors & 2,208 passengers. Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science The Sinking of the Titanic Fact: The Titanic was a luxury cruise ship with a swimming pool, 4 restaurants, 3 galleys, 2 libraries, a squash court, and a gym.

Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science The Sinking of the Titanic Fact: Although she could accommodate over 3000 people, they only had enough lifeboats to carry about 1178 people. Fact: She was constructed with 16 huge watertight compartments. Therefore the press called her "unsinkable." Fact: On the night of April 15, 1912, she hit an iceberg and sank. There were only 706 survivors. Over 1500 people died (68%). Video Link: Titanic Sinking AnimationTitanic Sinking Animation

Effect: sinking to the bottom of the sea Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science The Sinking of the Titanic What exactly was the cause? With 16 watertight compartments, what caused the Titanic to sink? The impact damaged five of the watertight compartments The water flowed over the top of the watertight bulkheads

Three: write 3 things you learned Notes SPI 0807.Inq.4: Cause and Effect Science 3-1-1 Review Activity One: Select the most important/most significant thing One: Write one question or one comment that you have about this topic.
