School of Earth Ocean & Environmental Sciences Problem Definition Information complexity / relevance: The information provided to coastal managers in the form of data, models and scientific interpretation is often too complicated to be of direct use Communication issues (scientists & end-users): –Scientists feel that … –End users feel that … –Different pressures on scientist and end-users –Short term practical use vs. long term benefits –Controlled vs. uncontrolled discussions –Local sites vs. general interests Technical issues: Inadequate temporal and spatial coverage and resolution Requirements: Need a better match of specialist knowledge to end user needs

A clearly defined ‘frame of reference’ is required in order to guide productive interaction between scientist and managers and to make CSIs useful… Frame of Reference allows: –Focused discussions between scientists and coastal managers –Direct linkage between CSIs and management issues –Integration of additional data / information sources –Clearly define benchmarking, intervention and evaluation procedures Video technology is useful for coastal zone management
