2 About Ernesto Miranda  Born on March 9, 1941  Grew up in Mesa, Arizona  His mother died  His father remarried  Did not communicate with siblings

3 Beginning to be trouble.  Started in grade school  Criminally convicted in 8 th grade  Convicted of burglary the next year  Sent to a reform school Arizona State Industrial School for Boys  He got out then went back

4 In Trouble  Arrested for armed robbery & sex offenses In Los Angeles, California He was not convicted  Deported back to Arizona

5 Time In The Army  Decided to join the Army  Received many AWOL charges  6 months in the stockade Fort Cambell, Kentucky  After 15 months, he was discharged.

6 Still In Trouble  Arrested in Texas Living on the street  Arrested in Nashville Driving a stolen car Sentenced to a year & a day Chillicothe, Ohio & Lompoc, California

7 The Crime  Arrested in Phoenix, Arizona.  Charged with rape and kidnapping.  Interrogated for two hours  Admitted to committing the crime

8 Problem  Never told his rights  Violated fifth and sixth amendments

9 Supreme Court for the State of Arizona  First stop in trial  Convicted but not charged

10 Superior Court, Maricopa County  Used his confession  Miranda was charged with the crime  20-30 years in prison

11 Supreme Court of Arizona  Third stop of trial  Miranda appeals decision  Affirmed conviction  Felt rights were not violated

12 Supreme Court of the United States  Final stop for the trial  4 of the same trials  Head Justice –Earl Warren

13 Verdict  Miranda wins case  5 to 4

14 Verdict  For: Warren, Black, Douglas, Fortas, Brennan  Against: Clark, Stewart, White, Harlan

16 Life after Case  Covicted for crime 20-30 years in jail  1972 got out on parole  Still in trouble  Died on January 31, 1976 murdered
