Earthquake Location & Size

3 Major Zones 1.Ring of Fire: Around the Pacific plate Type of Boundary: -Transform fault and convergent boundary

2.Eurasian- Melanesian: Collision between Asia and India. Type of boundary -Convergent

3.Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Rocks are pushed as a result of sea floor spreading. Type of boundary -Divergent

Earthquake Size Seismic waves are recorded by a Seismograph.

Charles Richter Measured the energy given off by an earthquake on his: Richter scale Energy given off by an Earthquake is its Magnitude Richter Scale Microquake: Under 2.5 Minor quake: 2.5 – 6 Moderate quake: 6 – 7 Major quake: 7 +

For each whole number that an earthquake reading goes up, 32x more energy is released. Ex. Difference between a 3 and 6. 23,768 times more energy released.

Modified Mercalli Measures the intensity of an earthquake. It is more subjective and is based on the amount of damage at a location. You can have different readings for the same earthquake in different cities. Scale goes from I to XII

Key to remember: Key to remember: An earthquake can only have one Magnitude but can have many intensities.
