3 The Difference Engine  Charles Babbage was born in December of 1791 and died in October of 1871.  He invented a machine he called a difference engine which was the first computer.  He had nine children.  The machine was never completed because the parts were too hard to make.  He died in poverty and no one knew how valuable his invention would be.
