Vocabulary A decision is the choice that we make. We make decisions all the time. We decide when to get up in the morning. We decide what to eat, what game to play, what books to read. What are some decisions you have already made today?

Read a Passage Today you will read about Rosa Parks, an African American woman who made a decision to take a stand that would change how African Americans were treated. As you read selections like this, it is helpful to compare and contrast one thing or event with another. When you compare things, you tell how they are alike. When you contrast things, you tell how they are different. Look for clue words or phrases that help you see likenesses and differences, such as like, but, also, the same as, differently, in the same way, and however.

Read a Passage We will listen to a passage called “ Rosa Parks Takes a Stand,” p.38

Read a Passage Please do your best listening as I will ask questions to monitor your comprehension.

Read a Passage What did you learn about the way black people were treated when Rosa Parks was a young woman?

Read a Passage What was the selection mainly about?
