PARTNERED PLANNING GRAFFITI AND ART

LAST WEEK STEP ONE: Combine all your topic, claim, and example cards together. STEP TWO: Read all the cards. As co-authors of a single argument, talk with your partner to answer the following questions: Which claims develop a strong, unified position? Which claims should we put aside for another argument at another time? Note: While talking with your partner, you may need to add more cards. STEP THREE: Now talk with your partner to answer the following questions: Which examples prove which claims? Which examples should we put aside for another argument at another time? Note: While talking with your partner, you may need to add more cards. STEP FOUR: Once you have chosen your most effective claims and examples to create a unified position of a single argument, stack each claim on top of the example(s) you plan on using for that claim and paperclip together.

TODAY STEP FIVE: Write “Introduction, ” “Thesis,” and “Conclusion” on separate cards. On your Thesis card, draft a rough thesis statement that announces your position. Now work together to answer the following questions: –If someone was hearing this idea for the first time, what is the best order to present the ideas to make the overall position clear and persuasive? –Do any of the claims build off each other, necessitating proving one before another? – How might the order affect the purpose and/or impact of the argument? Try at least two different ways of ordering your claims.

STRUCTURE & FUNCTION OF INTROS Thesis as a response to an observation Thesis as a response to a “They Say” Thesis as a response to a misconception Thesis as a way to join an existing conversation Thesis identifies where you stand on the issue

STRATEGIES FOR CONCLUSION Revisit spur Answer “So What? Who Cares?” Call to action for audience or governing body Larger significance (How will the future be better/worse? Implications? Reasoned predictions?)

GROUP ROUNDTABLE STEP SIX: Present your entire argument to your partner group. Make sure to work through your intro, thesis, claims, evidence, and conclusion. Groups: Kendall P/Man & Angela/Mahek Mariah/Blake/Kendall & Valeria/Abigail Olivia/Jonathan & Fahad/Courtney Kyrie & Ernesto/Larin
