7 Suggestions to improve time Stay focused, keep your head down and don’t look up – until the 5 minute warning. Because of the way the test is numbered, you could SKIM a “chunk” or paragraph, then answer those 1-4 questions and move on. Easy questions first, if a question is taking too much time – move on….

9 Usage/Mechanics – 40 questions Punctuation - 10q (commas, colons, semicolons, parentheses, apostrophes, period, question marks, exclamation points, hyphens and dashes) Grammar and Usage- 12q (nouns, use of appropriate pronouns, verb formation, verb tense, tense shift, subject-verb agreement, parallel form, adjectives and adverbs, comparatives and superlatives, idioms) Sentence Structure- 18q (run-on sentences, coma splices, sentence fragments, misplaced modifiers, shifts in construction)

10 Rhetorical Skills – 35 questions Strategy -12q Test your choice Which expression are appropriate to the audience & purpose; what is the effect of adding, revising, or deleting supporting material; is the statement relevant? Organization- 11q (placing a new sentence in a paragraph/passage, reorder sentences, or choosing the best transitions & closing sentences) Style- 12qKeep it Simple (Have you made corrections to make wording more precise; avoided wordiness, and redundancy)
