2 Reminder of Counseling Class Expectations 1.Sit up on the steps of the amphitheater with your feet on the step in front of you. 2.Listen, without talking, when the teacher or another student is talking. 3.Raise your hand if you would like to speak. 4.When working in groups, stay on task and work only with your assigned group. 5.Follow all directions throughout the lesson.

3 Lesson Objectives Review what makes a bully a bully. Identify ways you can help stand up to a bully. – Complete a pretest/posttest on standing up to a bully – Watch “Don’t Stand By: Stand Up to a Bully” video and discuss – Complete handout: “Choose Your Words” and “Being a Pal” Recognize times when friends may be bullies. Identify strategies for making new friends.

4 What Is Bullying? Bullying is a pattern of repeated behavior that is meant to hurt someone (physically, emotionally, or socially) and usually has an imbalance of power (physical or social).

17 Ask E-Guy Dear E-Guy, A girl in my class trips and kicks me when no one is looking. My teacher never believes me. She just calls me a tattletale and says I should focus on my work. What can I do? Signed, Black and Blue Dear E-Guy, Three teenagers hang out at the end of my street. Every morning on my way to the bus stop, they ask for spare change. Today they threatened to beat some money out of me. What should I do? Signed, Really Worried E-guy has a popular online advice column for young people. Today, E-guy’s computer crashed and he needs you to fill in. Answer the questions below on the back of your handout.

18 Do you think you might have a bully for a friend? Look for the warning signs below: Do you feel upset when you’re around this friend? Do you think the friend just wants something from you (help with school, to fit in, etc.)? Do you feel stressed, angry, or sad after being with this friend? Do you have a headache, stomachache, or other help problems when you are with the friend or afterward? Does your friend often say things that are negative or insulting about you? Does your friend ask you to do things you don’t want to do?

19 You Have the Choice to Make Better Friends! Join activities and hobbies that your problem friend isn’t interested in. Make new friends by saying hello to at least one new person each day. Stand up for yourself! Don’t let someone bully you into wasting one more minute on a bad friendship. Get help when you need it by talking to a teacher, counselor, or family member you trust.
