2 As the Nation’s industrial growth continued, cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and New York grew rapidly as manufacturing and transportation centers.

3 Factories in large cities provided jobs, but worker’s families often lived in tenements and slums. Tenements are overcrowded, bug infested, non sanitary housing.

4 The rapid growth of cities caused housing shortages and the need for public services. ( sewage and water systems)

5 NEW YORK was the first city to install an underground subway system around the turn of the twentieth century

6 Many cities built trolleys and streetcar lines.
