Topic: Digestive System & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food?

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? Digestive System Function- to break down food into molecules that can be used by the body Digestion- process that occurs in your body where food is broken down into molecules

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? What happens to the food? Mouth- saliva begins to break down your food while you chew Esophagus- lined with mucus which makes food easy to swallow and move through the digestive system Peristalsis- involuntary waves of muscle contractions that move food down the esophagus

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? Stomach Food remains in the stomach until it has been turned into liquid Digestive juice contains the enzyme pepsin and hydrochloric acid Pepsin kills bacteria that enters with food Hydrochloric acid helps the stomach to function properly. Mucus coats and protects the stomach from acids

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? The Excretory System The function of the excretory system is the excrete (get rid of) wastes that are not helpful to the body. Wastes that are removed include carbon dioxide, water, salt, urea and uric acid. All excreted wastes travel at some time in the blood.

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? Excretory System Structures of the excretory system 1.Skin 2.Lungs 3.Liver 4.Large intestine 5.Urinary System

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? Waste removal Skin- sweat is waste (salt, uric acid) Lungs- Carbon dioxide is exhaled

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? The Liver (also part of the digestive system!) 1.to produce substances that break down fats 2.produce urea (the main substance of urine) 3.make certain amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) 4.filter harmful substances from the blood (such as alcohol)

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? The Large Intestine The large intestine removes solid, undigested food from the body after it passes through the digestive system. Waste is stored in rectum until it is excreted from the body as solid waste.

Topic: Digestive & Excretory System Essential Question: What physical and chemical changes occur when we digest food? The Urinary System The kidneys filter the blood to form urine, which is excess water, salt, urea and uric acid.

Now take some time… Take 2 minutes to go over your notes and highlight or underline the main ideas that answer the essential question, you should not highlight everything:

Time to use the left hand column You will now write your own questions using the question starters provided.
