3 How many “supercontinents” did Alfred Wegner’s theory assume? 1 supercontinent that is Pangea.

4 What are the major plates the affect the United States? North American plate and the Pacific plate.

5 Hazard Zone Of California, Florida, and Illinois? California is the highest of all hazard zones. Then Florida has the lowest hazard zone. Illinois’s rank on the hazard zone scale is 2-4.

6 What is the most destructive earthquake in the United States? The 1556 Shaanxi earthquake in China. The earthquake killed approximately 830,000 people. Its magnitude was 8.

7 What is 1 of the three basic plate boundaries? Transform boundary- a plate boundary where 2 plates move past each other in opposite directions.

8 What is another basic plate boundary? Convergent boundary- a plate boundary where 2 plates move toward each other.

9 What is the 3 rd basic plate boundary? Divergent boundary- a plate boundary where 2 plates move apart.

10 What are tsunamis? Tsunamis are series of very long ocean waves they are created by an undersea earthquake, volcanic eruption.

11 How fast do tsunamis travel? In water 3.7 miles deep waves can travel up to 5 hundred mph, but the shallower the water the slower it moves.

12 What the two types of energy waves created by an earthquake? How do they differ? The two types of waves are primary waves, and secondary waves. P- waves travel 1 st they go through all 3 types of matters. S-waves comes 2 nd and only travel through solids.

13 Which type of wave travels faster? S-waves travel slower, therefore there secondary waves. P-waves travel faster than s- waves.

14 How much more energy is released by a 7.2 earthquake then by a 6.2 earthquake? Magnitude of a 7.2 earthquake is 10 times bigger than the magnitude of a 6.2 earthquake, but is 31.622 times stronger.

15 What applications does seismology have besides measuring the magnitude and location of earthquakes? Seismologist can locate oil deposits, subsurface water. They also can monitor the underground testing of nuclear devices.

16 Where did most of the earthquakes happen last week? The Bering strait by Alaska and the coast of California.

17 Can scientists predict earthquakes? Scientist have little hope of predicting earthquakes. They can predict where they happen, but they can’t predict when.

18 How do scientists know where an earthquake actually occurred? Using more than 1 seismograph, measuring how far a part the p and s- waves are, and will show them how far away the earthquake actually occurred.
