SUMMARY OF LESSON

Gravity- the gravitational attraction by Earth, or any massive body in space, on objects or at near its surface Weightlessness- being without apparent weight, as a freely fall ing body or a body acted upon by a force that neutralizes gravitation. VOCAB

Gravitation is an attractive force between objects that have mass. Gravitation causes objects to fall back to Earth. Gravitation is an example of a non-contact force. Gravitation keeps Earth and the other planets in their orbits around the Sun. GRAVITATION

Gravity plays a large role in the formation of the solar system. Around 4 billion years ago the solar system was born from a nebula, which is a cloud of gas and dust. The force of gravity collapsed the cloud into a star, planets, and other bodies. FORMATION OF SOLAR SYSTEM

Weight is a measure of gravity pulling on your body When you travel up in an elevator it is the force of gravity pushing you down WEIGHTLESSNESS

DIAGRAM OF GRAVITY

BEYOND THE BOOK

FACTS ABOUT GRAVITY When planets are in orbit gravity keeps them in orbit Gravity is when objects that have mass are attracted to each other Acceleration of objects due to the gravity on Earth is around 9.8 m. The force of gravity above Earth is only 3 percent less than at Earth’s surface. Isaac Newton was the first person to discover gravity.

Many scientists think that our solar system was formed by a giant, rotating cloud of gas and dust known as the solar nebula. As the nebula collapsed because of its gravity, it spun faster and flattened out into a disk. FORMATION OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM FACTS
