4.  Yet, how can a heart be so different from a brain if all the cells contain the same instructions?  Although much work remains in genetics, it has become apparent that a cell has the ability to turn off most genes and only work with the genes necessary to do a job.  There is a theory that a lot of DNA is nonsense and codes for nothing!  These regions of DNA that do not code for proteins are sometimes called “junk DNA”.

5. WHAT IS A GENE?  A gene is a segment or small part of DNA that is located on a chromosome and that codes for a specific hereditary trait.

6. WHAT IS DNA AND WHERE IS IT FOUND? DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid and is the chemical that genes are made of. DNA is the genetic instructions for how a plant or animal will look. What traits will it have inherited? It is found in most nuclei which is why it is called a nucleic acid. DNA can also be found in mitochondria AND some chloroplasts.
