DEPTH OF FIELD

DEPTH OF FIELD is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appears in sharp focus. The area in which objects located various distances from the camera are in focus.

DEPTH OF FIELD deep depth of field= everything is in focus shallow depth of field= subject in focus, all else out of focus

CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD

Depth of field can be controlled by: F-stop/aperture opening = depth of field is increased as the lens aperture becomes smaller

CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD The lower the f-stop number (larger opening), the more shallow the depth of field. The higher the f-stop number (smaller opening), the deeper the depth of field.

CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD f/1.7f/22

CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD Depth of field can also be controlled by: Distance from the lens to the subject = depth of field increases the farther away the subject is from the camera

CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD The closer the distance between the camera and the subject, the more shallow the depth of field (as distance increases, depth of field increases).

CONTROLLING DEPTH OF FIELD Even at an f/16 (larger opening), the depth of field of this shot is shallow because the camera was positioned close to the subject. When shot at f/2.8, the depth of field is really shallow.
