3 Chpt 10 Vocabulary Biodiversity- the variety of organisms, species, communities, or genetic variation in a given area. Poaching- the illegal harvesting of fish, game, or other species. Gene- a segment of DNA that is located in a chromosome and that codes for a specific hereditary trait. Endemic species- a species that is native to a particular place and that is found only there. Germ plasm- hereditary material (chromosomes and genes) that is usually contained in the protoplasm of germ cells. Keystone species- a species that is critical to the functioning of an ecosystem in which it lives because it affects the survival and abundance of many other species in its community. Endangered Species Act- an act that the U.S. Congress passed in 1973 to protect any plant or animal species in danger of extinction. Ecotourism- a form of tourism that supports the conservation and sustainable development of ecologically unique areas. Habitat conservation plan- a land-use plan that attempts to protect threatened or endangered species across a given area by allowing some trade- offs between harm to the species and additional conservation commitments among cooperating parties. Endangered species- a species that has been identified to be in danger of extinction and is under protection by regulations or conservation measures. Threatened species- a species that has been identified to be likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. Biodiversity Treaty- an International agreement aimed at strengthening national control and preservation of biological resources. Exotic species- a species that is not native to a particular region.

4 Biodiversity How many species are estimated to be on Earth?
In what part of the world are the greatest number of extinctions occurring? What would be most effective in slowing the loss of biodiversity?

5 Biodiversity How many species are estimated to be on Earth? More than 10 million In what part of the world are the greatest number of extinctions occurring? Tropical rain forest What would be most effective in slowing the loss of biodiversity? Creating large preserves/parks in biodiversity hotspots (international laws are not always followed)

6 Biodiversity Which areas of the United States represent ecosystems with high levels of biodiversity? How did the reduction in the sea otter population affect the Pacific coast ecosystem?

7 Biodiversity Which areas of the United States represent ecosystems with high levels of biodiversity? Hawaiian islands (tropical rain forest), Coastal California (kelp forests), Florida Everglades (swamp) How did the reduction in the sea otter population affect the Pacific coast ecosystem? By decreasing the biodiversity of the ecosystem

8 Species What is an endangered species?
According to biologists, what percentage of species have become or are expected to become extinct between 1900 and 2100? Are most organisms concentrated in certain biomes or evenly spread around the Earth?

9 Species What is an endangered species? A species in danger of extinction According to biologists, what percentage of species have become or are expected to become extinct between 1900 and 2100? 25% Are most organisms concentrated in certain biomes or evenly spread around the Earth? Concentrated in certain biomes

10 Species What is the cause of the current rate of species extinction?
What groups of organisms are most in danger of extinction? Why is biodiversity important in ecosystems?

11 Species What is the cause of the current rate of species extinction? The actions of humans What groups of organisms are most in danger of extinction? Small populations and those that migrate or need special habitats Why is biodiversity important in ecosystems? It helps populations adapt to ecological changes.

12 Extinction What are the major human causes of extinction today?
How can zoos, botanical gardens, and wildlife parks help save species? Where are many critical biodiversity hotspots located?

13 Extinction What are the major human causes of extinction today? Polluting and introducing non-native species, destroying habitats and hunting. How can zoos, botanical gardens, and wildlife parks help save species? By preserving threatened species from destruction and by participating in captive breeding programs. Where are many critical biodiversity hotspots located? Islands, tropical rain forests, and coastal areas

14 Extinction What is germ plasm?
Because of the Endangered Species Act, what can happen to someone who sales protected animals or plants? What is the ecosystem approach to conservation?

15 Extinction What is germ plasm? The genetic material of a species.
Because of the Endangered Species Act, what can happen to someone who sales protected animals or plants? They can be punished with a substantial fine What is the ecosystem approach to conservation? A healthy biosphere requires intact ecosystems.

16 Species What is an organism that is not native to a particular region?
The sources of many antibiotics are in chemicals produced by what organisms? Honeycreepers that are only found in the Hawaiian Islands are an example of what type of species? What type of program is being used to help increase the population of California condors by breeding them in captivity and then releasing them to the wild?

17 Species What is an organism that is not native to a particular region? Exotic species The sources of many antibiotics are in chemicals produced by what organisms? Fungi Honeycreepers that are only found in the Hawaiian Islands are an example of what type of species? Endemic species What type of program is being used to help increase the population of California condors by breeding them in captivity and then releasing them to the wild? Captive breeding

18 Species What law has reintroduced the gray wolf in certain areas of the northwestern United States? Are the United States laws that protect endangered species considered strong or weak? What would not be illegal under the Endangered Species Act? What is the illegal hunting and slaughter of African elephants for their ivory tusks called?

19 Species What law has reintroduced the gray wolf in certain areas of the northwestern United States? The U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 Are the United States laws that protect endangered species considered strong or weak? Strong, they are considered to be the strongest in the world. What would not be illegal under the Endangered Species Act? Have a permit to capture and conduct research with endangered species (not to kill them, dig up endangered plants, destroy habitats, or place threatened species in a zoo) What is the illegal hunting and slaughter of African elephants for their ivory tusks called? Poaching
