Sports Nutrition In most developed countries, health care has improved to the point where contagious diseases like smallpox, polio, and tuberculosis and no longer major causes of death. We now have what is called “chronic disease”.

Sports Nutrition Chronic diseases like (1) heart disease(4) lung disease (2) cancer(6) Alzheimer’s (3) stroke(7) diabetes cause 85% of all deaths. These diseases are sometimes called lifestyle diseases.

Sports Nutrition There are 2 primary factors that influence one’s health status. 1. genetics 2. lifestyle

Sports Nutrition Genetic Predisposition The Human Genome Project deciphered the DNA code of 80,000-100,000 genes and had identified various genes associated with chronic diseases.

Sports Nutrition Genetic Predisposition Genetically, females whose mothers had breast cancer are at increased risk for breast cancer. Males whose fathers had prostate cancer are at increased risk for prostate cancer.

Sports Nutrition Genetic Predisposition There is currently a lot of research being done on genetic therapy. The plan is to develop a genetic treatment or effective cure for predisposition.

Sports Nutrition Lifestyle Over the years, scientists have identified a number of health behaviors considered to be health risks. These lifestyle factors and known as risk factors.

Sports Nutrition Lifestyle There are generally considered to be 4 major risk factors. 1. poor nutrition 2. inactivity 3. excess alcohol consumption 4. smoking

The more risk factors present, the greater likelihood of premature death. A person with all 4 risk factors is likely to die 12 years prematurely. Physical inactivity is a risk factor for more than 25 chronic diseases.

Sports Nutrition Treatment of chronic diseases is very expensive. In the 1980’s the US Public Health Service published a series of reports designed to increase the nation’s health.
