1.4 – HISTOGRAMS AND STEM- AND-LEAF PLOTS

THE HISTOGRAM The dot plot below provides information about the amount of money 16 students had with them on a given day. What if you asked 600 students how much money they had instead of asking 16 students, would you want to use a dot plot? Of course you wouldn’t. That would take too long. We can use something called a histogram.histogram A histogram is similar to dot plot but is more useful when you have a large amount of data. Histograms must be numeric and ordered along the horizontal axis. 2

THE HISTOGRAM The histogram below represents the Pocket Money dot plot. What are some reasons that you believe the histogram may be superior to the dot plot when using a large amount of data? What does the blue arrow point to? What does the green arrow point to? What does the orange arrow point to? 3

THE HISTOGRAM 4 Let’s try to answer the following questions Most students had money between which values? How do the bin widths affect your answer?

INVESTIGATION 1.4: HAND SPANS In this investigation, you’ll collect hand-span measurements and make a histogram. You’ll organize the data using different bin widths and compare the results to a box plot. Investigation 1.4: Hand Spans 5
