Acceleration and Motion Acceleration equals the change in velocity divided by the time for the change to take place; Occurs when an object speeds up, slows down, or turns Acceleration has direction. If an object speeds up, the acceleration is in the same direction that the object is moving. If an object slows down, the acceleration is opposite to the direction that the object is moving.

Speeding up & Slowing down Acceleration occurs when an object speeds up as well when it speeds down. *When an object is speeding up its acceleration increases. When and object is speeding up its acceleration is positive. Example- When your riding a bike and your about to pedal the bike moves slowly at first and then starts to accelerate because the speed is increasing. *When an objects speed is down its acceleration is decreases. When and object is slowing down its acceleration is negative. Example- When your riding a bike fast and you apply the brake, this causes you to slow down, and your speed begins to change, your acceleration is decreasing.

Changing Direction * Motion isn't always along a straight line. If the acceleration is at an angle to the direction of motion, the object is going to turn. When the object is changing direction, at the same time, it might speed up, slow down, or not change speed at all.

Calculating Acceleration For motion in a straight line, acceleration can be calculated from this equation. Acceleration = (Final speed)-(Initial Speed) Divided by the Time.

Graphing Accelerated Motion *On a speed-time graph, a line sloping up represents positive acceleration. * A line sloping down represents negative acceleration. *A horizontal line represents zero acceleration.
