2.  Information (or data) processing refers to computer-based system that take in data and generate information.  Example: Carrying out calculations in a spreadsheet. Updating data in a file.

3.  Commercial data processing  Scientific Data processing  Industrial data processing  Control Systems ◦ Automation Systems and Process control Systems.

4.  This is used to carry out some time consuming administrative tasks.  Example  Sales in a shop, dealing with purchase at the till.  Payments: Paying other business who have supplied materials and services.

5.  Industrial and manufacturing business need to carry out business tasks. They consist of  Control System  Computer aided design  Computer Aided Engineering and Computer Aided manufacturing

6.  These use computers to control machinery.  Two Kinds of Control System  Automation Systems and Process control Systems.

7.  Automation System are a straight forward type of control system in which tasks are carried out automatically.  Process Control system are a type  of control system used in manufacturing in which actions are changed depending on feedback from the sensors.

8.  In scientific data processing data is gathered continuously during an experiment and recorded so that it can be analysed.

9.  Case Study Mark had done Information Technology in school and was now looking for a job. He got one at Coca Cola and was working in the Office. They told him that they have various types of processing that take place in the company and they need him to identify and separate them. They have to calculate how much money employees should be paid. Some of the employees work on monitoring the equipment that controls the processes used when manufacturing the soft drink. Some of the other employees record orders that customers place with the business and then keep track of them when the goods are sent. The employees are given uniforms which are washed in the washing machines at least once before they are given out. The company even often develops new soft drink and to do so the companies chemists have to do experiments and record data using sensors to record texture and consistency of the soft drink.
