Storage, an infrastructure component TERENA storage collaboration meeting Amsterdam, 29.6.2007 Jan Meijer uninett.no

2 eVITA is the programme in the Research Council of Norway for e-Science. eVITA has the strategic responsibility for the e-Infrastructure for computational science. Instrument for implementation: Notur is the Norwegian HPC project that exists since 2000. Partners are NTNU, UiB, UiO, UiT, met.no, UNINETT Sigma. UNINETT has the responsibility for the academic research network. Context

3 2007: UNINETT redefined

4

5 NorStore NorGrid + Tier-1 Notur National eScience, eLearning

6 Future of storage You indicate what you want to store how The storage layer takes care of it

7 Drivers raw scientific data long term storage requirements research project funding lifelong learning student mobility complexity of storage, economy of scale creating new opportunities decoupling storage from processing sharing research data

8 Different types of services Raw storage connectors (iSCSI, FC) Formatted storage space (your filesystem of choice, GPFS, ext3, NTFS etc.) Variety of connectors (GPFS, NFS, CIFS, HTTP (webDAV), GridFTP, FTP etc.) Full services

9 Archiving (long term storage) Disaster recovery (offsite backup) Collaboration environments (versioning, signing/timestamping of data etc.) Authenticated large file exchange Databases Repositories:  learning modules (LMS)  raw scientific data  research papers (DARE like)  education video....... ….

10 Why this meeting? national eScience, eLearning storage infra: many aspects to cover much going on already need high quality of ALL services to differentiate research does not stop at the border

11 Developing storage services Development time Investment in equipment etc. Operational costs Maintain specialist skills (quality! leading edge!) International coordination

12 Working together makes sense More services developed in same timeframe Reduction of TCO of service portfolio Leading edge on ALL services Reduce risk of services crumbling Economy of scale towards developers, vendors
