Conduction and Convection

What happens when cold (coloured) water is poured into hot clear water? A current will be created. Why is a current created? The cold water sinks to the bottom, pushing the warm water up.

Conduction and Convection Thus, we end up with a current which creates a mixing action where heat from the hotter particles to the cooler particles.

Conduction and Convection Explain and draw diagrams to show how both Convection and Conduction act to cool a drink when ice cubes are put into it:

Conduction and Convection Convection As the ice melts, the colder water particles fall to the bottom of the glass while the warmer particles rise. This creates a current which mixes the cooler and warmer particles together, creating a cooler mixture overall.

Convection and Conduction Conduction As the hotter water particles collide with both the ice particles and the cooler water particles around the ice. The heat from the warmer water particles is physically transferred to the cooler particles, as a result, warming them up.
