2. Things that grow a population Birth Rate: The number of births per 1000 people Immigration Rate: the number of new Canadians who have immigrated here from another country, per 1000 people of Canada’s population

3. Things that shrink a population Death Rate: The number of deaths per 1000 people Emigration Rate: the number of people per 1000 who move away from Canada in a given year

4. Natural Increase Birth Rate – Death Rate = Natural Increase

5. Net Migration Rate Immigration – Emigration = Net Migration Rate

6. Population Growth Rate Natural Increase + Net Migration = Population Growth Rate

7. Doubling Time How long it would take for the population to double in size at its current growth rate Can be estimated using the rule of 70 –Divide 70 by the population growth rate –Ex: Growth rate of 3.6% 70/3.6 = 19.44 Therefore the population of this country would double in less than 20 years at its current growth rate

8. Dependency Load The proportion of a population that must be supported –i.e. children or seniors Children need education, daycare, etc. Seniors need health care, old age homes, etc. Neither one contributes meaningfully to the economy through work/taxes
