2 Personal Details Lenord Roache Treen was born on September 26, 1891 in Malagash, NS. He later moved to East Hansford, NS and worked as a lumberman. He enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on May 27, 1916 in Oxford, NS at the age of 25. He served in World War 1 as a private. Regimental number: 901805.

3 Cont’d Son of Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Treen. Religion: Methodist Leonard Treen was originally assigned to the 193 rd Battalion but was eventually moved to other units such as the 42 nd BN (Dec. 12,1916) and 85 th BN (Dec. 3, 1917).

6 Medical History Leonard Treen was examined on March 27, 1916 in Oxford, NS. He was 25 yrs. old His medical information was approved by Capt. E.D. McLean. He was in good physical health at the time of his medical examination. Vaccinations were up to date.

9 Memorial Cross The Memorial Cross (often referred to as the Silver Cross) was instituted December 1, 1919. Initially, it was awarded to mothers and widows of Canadian soldiers who were killed in action, died on active service or whose death was consequently attributed to such service. Subsequently, in the absence of a mother or a widow the Memorial Cross was then given to the eldest surviving next of kin.

10 Oxford Cenotaph Leonard Roache Treen’s name is engraved on the Cenotaph in Oxford, NS. The Cenotaph was made in honour of the many soldiers that lost their lives while defending Canada overseas (France) in World War 1 ( 1914-1918). Thirty-two soldiers names are inscribed on the Cenotaph.
