Good Morning! 10/26/2012 1.What is a front? 2.How does an occluded front form? 3.James looks outside his window and sees stratus clouds. What kind of weather can he expect? DO NOW!

LEQ #10 How can scientists predict weather patterns and conditions?

Scientists who study weather are called METEOROLOGISTS.

W EATHER FORECASTING is an attempt to make accurate predictions about future weather patterns.

STATION TIME! Let’s be forecasters! STATIONS : 1. Wind 2. Air Temperature 3. Humidity 5. Weather maps, satellites & radar 6. Cloud elevation -You will have 8 minutes at each station before Ms. K will say ROTATE!

DONT’S -Walk around the room -Move before Ms. K tells you to -Mess with the materials -talk to other groups -be off task! -throw things DO’S -Remain at your group - Talking QUIETLY to your partners - On Task - Answer all questions fully - Respect the classroom and materials

Wind Direction can be shown by flags or blowing dust. Speed is measured with an anemometer.

Air Temperature Measure of the energy of molecules. The more energy of the molecules = the hotter it feels. Measured by thermometers.

Humidity Compares the actual amount of water vapor in the air with the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at that temperature.

Weather Maps, Satellites & Radar Weather maps show precipitation, wind direction, air temperature, humidity, and air pressure. Satellite images & radar allow forecasters to track movement of air masses and fronts.

Cloud Elevation Cirrus: High altitude, water freezes to form ice crystals. Stratus & Cumulus: Low level.
