2 The Territory of Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean, composed solely of that island. It has a population of 2,072 residents who live in a number of "settlement areas" on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove(also known as Kampong), Silver City, Poon Saan, and Drumsite. The majority of the population are Chinese Australian. It is called "Christmas Island" because it was discovered on Christmas Day (25 December 1643).territoryFlying Fish CovePoon SaanChinese Australian

3 Christmas Island National Park is a national park occupying most of Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Oceansouthwest of Indonesia. [1] The park is home to many species of animal and plant life, including the eponymous red crab, whose annual migration sees around 100 million crabs move to the sea to spawn. Christmas Island is the only nesting place for theendangered Abbott's Booby and critically endangered Christmas Island Frigatebird, and the wide range of other endemic species makes the island of significant interest to the scientific community. 5 Dolly Beach is perhaps the most impressive beach on Christmas Island. However getting there would require some effort. The spectacular downhill drive from the central plateau, pass Greta Beach, to Dolly Beach car park needs no further introduction. From the car park, its a wonderful two odd kilometres trek through the coastal rainforest to reach Dolly Beach. This trail to Dolly Beach also boasts of having the longest wooden boardwalk on the island. The three most common varieties of land crabs, the Red, the Blue and the Robber Crabs are commonly seen along this forest trail.

7 ATTRACTION LILY BEACH Lily Beach is a keyhole beach with cuts into sheer cliff on either side. There is a gazebo with table and chairs - the perfect place for a picnic! There are large trees providing shade and it has a large sandy bottomed rock pool, particularly suited to young children at low tide when it is calm, although big waves can crash through anytime and caution is required. When the seas are up Lily Beach is a spectacular place to watch the waves crashing into the cliffs. A boardwalk along the cliff edge between Lilly Beach and Ethel Beach provides a look at a variety of birds including Brown Boobys and Red Footed Boobys nesting on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. A few blow-holes will add interest to your walk.

9 Greta beach OAOApproximately 30 minutes drive from Settlement and then a short three minute walk into the beach through rainforest. This beach is a collection point for interesting flotsam and jetsam washed ashore and is home to thousands of tiny hermit crabs. There is a secluded rock pool at the end of the beach suitable for children when it is calm. This is a major site for crab spawning and Turtles nest all year round on this beach.
