Sentence types By: Courtney Smith

Simple  The first of 4 sentence types is simple.  A simple sentence has one subject-verb phrase. Example: The girl danced.  There is one subject-verb phrase, “girl danced ”

Compound  The second sentence type is compound.  It is two simple sentences combined by a coordinating conjunction or semi colon. Example: I like to eat pie; however, I don’t like donuts.  In the sentence, “I like to eat pie” is the first independent clause, and “I don’t like donuts.” is the second, combined by a semi colon.

Complex  The 3 rd type is complex  Complex sentences are two simple sentences, but one has a subordinating conjunction in front of it, so it cannot stand with out the other simple sentence. Example: Because the girl fell, she got a cut.  In this sentence, “because the girl fell” is the clause that makes it a complex sentence, because “because” is the subordinating conjunction.

Compound-complex  The last sentence type is compound-complex.  It is two independent clauses and 1 or more dependent clauses. It has both coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Example: Because the little girl fell of her bike, she cut her knee, and she had to get stiches.  “Because the little girl fell of her bike” is the dependent clause, and “she cut her knee… she had to get stiches.” are the two independent clauses.
