Pieces Missing and Compare the Wholes to Compare Fractions Unit of Study: 7 Global Concept Guide: 3 of 4

Content Development Models should be used to help students compare and order fractions., including fractions greater than one. Number lines should be HEAVILY emphasized as it is an efficient strategy for comparing and ordering fractions., including fractions greater than one. Students should utilize the strategy of pieces missing when comparing and ordering fractions. Students should make comparisons in real world situations.

Day 1 and 2  How can you use models to compare fractions greater than one? >  Students should see that the first representation has more wholes than the second. Students can compare the wholes to determine which fractions is greater. < The second model is greater because it has a whole in addition to a fraction

Day 1 and 2  Students should use a variety of models to compare fractions, including fractions greater than one.  The number line should be used to compare fractions greater than one.

Day 3  How can you use the strategy pieces missing to compare fractions? 4/6 10/12  Both fractions have two pieces missing however, the pieces in the first figure are larger than the pieces in the second figure. Therefore, we can say that 10/12 is greater than 4/6.  Sample problem: Which fraction is greater? 8/10 or 10/12?

Day 4  How can you compare fractions, including fractions greater than one using efficient strategies?  On Day 4, students will use all strategies they have learned to compare fractions including fractions greater than one.

Enrich/Reteach  For students who are struggling with this concept, utilize hands on materials and number lines. Use the following activities: Reteach Activity p. 357B, Language Support Activity p. 357B  For students who need extension, utilize the following activities: Enrich Activity p. 357B, Lesson 8.4 E73, Lesson 8.5 E74.
