1 WHAT ARE THE POST REVOLUTION NORMS OR EXPECTATIONS OF IRANIAN SOCIETAL INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS SCHOOLS, RELIGION, FAMILIES, AND GOVERNMENT, AND HOW DID THEY IMPACT THE CITIZENS OF IRAN, THE U.S., AND/OR THE REST OF THE WORLD? SHERIDAN WOOD

2 GOVERNMENT Iran is a theocratic republic. Iran's supreme religious leader is Ayatollah Ali Hoseini-Khamenei, who is the head of state. The 86-member Assembly of Experts contains clerics who are responsible for electing the supreme leader, observing his actions, and removing him if he’s not fulfilling his role. The supreme leader appoints the 12- member Guardian Council to serve six-year terms. The council approves candidates for president, assigns judicial authorities, and has authority over the constitution. The president is the head of government and is directly elected by popular vote to serve a four-year term.

3 SCHOOLS Iran's education system underwent a dramatic process of Islamization. Schools and universities were viewed as important for re-educating the people and spreading the ideals of the revolution. Academics who did not embrace the revolution and pledge loyalty to its leaders were removed from educational institutions. After 1983, the demand for higher education increased significantly, pressing the government to apply some reforms. Before 1989, privately owned colleges and universities were not allowed to operate in Iran, but, a change in policy that year allowed private institutions to offer courses for the first time since the shah was overthrown.

4 FAMILY The family unit is strong in Iran and provides its members with a sense of identity and security. Families have found ways to balance Westernization with their outdated social beliefs.
