Do Now Heading: Electrical Safety Pick up 3 worksheets from the front table Open up your journals

Electrical Safety You are given 4 electrical safety kits, with different electrical safety devices, and told to identify which rooms you would install them in this house.

Electrical Safety Choose the 4 rooms you would install them in In 3-5 sentences describe why you would put a safety device in that room and what you would protect. Each kit has everything you will need The kits cannot be broken up or shared between rooms.

Four common Electrical Safety devices 1)Surge Protector 2)Fuse 3)GCIF Outlet 4)Circuit Breaker

Surge Protectors Purpose: Protect our electrical devices from voltage spikes How does it work? A surge protector tries to minimize the voltage going to an object by blocking it or shorting the extra voltage to a safe place.

Shorting the circuit Purpose: To pull the current away from the device or resistor and send it back to the battery. How does it work? The current wants to go where there is LOW RESISITANCE. The electronic device will not get enough current to turn on.

Fuses Purpose: To protect devices from getting too much current How does it work? When too much current flows through it, the metal in the middle will melt which breaks the circuit. Metal center that melts

GFCI Outlets Purpose: To stop the flow of current if the current going out does not equal the current going back in. How does it work? When the current leaving the large hole does not equal the current entering the small hole, the black switch pops which breaks the circuit. To use it again, you must press the red button to reset the circuit. TYPICALLY USED AROUND WATER

Circuit Breaker Purpose: To cut off the source of voltage or power if they get too large How does it work? When too much voltage or power is detected a switch is flipped breaking the circuit until someone closes the switch.
