6 Tarot cards Game cards popularised in Europe in the late 15 th century * Magical societies in the English speaking world began to adapt the cards to their beliefs, with two popular varieties originating from Britain – that by Arthur Waite and more famously Alistair Crowley, with artwork created by Pamela Smith and Frieda Harris. They were rival members of The Order of the Golden Dawn. * Throughout the 20th century, they became more thematic. The Psychedelic era of the 1960s was partly influenced by this and artwork of the period reflects a magic undertone. * Tarot cards are also widely parodied or acknowledged in pop culture today.
