5. + Let’s Get Down to $ Business $  Fundraising  Example- Projected (5yr) gross income from Middle School Choral Program  Coming out ahead  Money is not our only purpose  Do we want to put our students’ education at risk because of a couple dollar signs?  I THINK NOT With our fundraising, we will be bringing in more money than what we spend, therefore, we are coming out on top. After 5 projected years: +$54,649 (this number will grow exponentially as we grow in student participation) Bottom line: If we are making more money than we spend, why would we cut the program due to lack of funds? And its relation to other courses Mathematics Spatial Intelligence, is the ability to look at a complex problem and be able to brake it down into it’s individual functions, understand it’s meaning, and find the appropriate solution. (Rauscher 2002) Reading and Writing A Musician goes through the same process of thinking, while reading music as someone reading this slide. Any given sign has three unique elements that allows the reader to interpret it; these three elements are the sign, object, and interpretation. The sign is the “pure quality or sensory feeling,” the object is “brute fact,” and the interpretation is the reader’s thoughts and emotions to the sign and object. 7. + Studies In a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Education they found that “students involved in band or orchestra during their middle and high school years demonstrated significantly higher levels of math proficiency by grade 12. The results were even more pronounced for low-income families.” (President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities) In a study in two Rhode Island elementary schools that were given enriched, sequential, skill-building music programs showed improvement in reading and math skills. “Students in the enriched programs who had started out behind the control group caught up to near equality in reading, and pulled ahead in math (Gardiner).” It is suggested that at least two years of music instruction is all that is required for a sustained enhancement of spatial abilities (Rauscher 2002).
