1 The Reflection of Sound Waves the reflection of sound is a common occurrence as in water waves, sound waves reflect at the same angle in which they were transmitted

2 The reflection of sound waves is an important part of certain concepts: 1. Echoes - produced when a sound wave is reflected off a hard surface - time interval must be greater than 0.1 s between the original sound and the reflected sound, and the observer must be greater than 17m from the reflecting surface - echolocation boyecholocation boy - Chitzen Itza, MexicoChitzen Itza, Mexico 2. Sonar - acronym for sound navigation and ranging devices - short pulses of sound is emitted underwater, the time it takes to return (echo) is measured and using the speed of sound in water, the distance is calculated - sonar ruler appsonar ruler app

3 Example A ship sends out a pulse that returns from the floor of the sea in 3.42 s. If the speed of sound through salt water is 1531 m/s, what is the distance to the bottom of the sea? v = 1531 m/s t = 3.42 s d = ? d = vt = (1531)(3.42) = 5236.02 distance ÷ 2 = 2618.01 The distance to the bottom of the sea is 2 620 m. 7.6 Prac. #1-4 UC #1-3
