3.8 Introducing the Inch

Introducing the Inch If you buy a piece of wood, it is not measured with connecting cubes or paper clips. How is it measured?

Introducing the Inch What are some things that are smaller than a piece of wood? How are they measured?

Introducing the Inch How long is an inch? Can you hold your thumb and forefinger one inch apart?

Introducing the Inch This pattern block is exactly one inch long. Compare your estimate with the pattern block.

Introducing the Inch Using your pattern block as a reference, look around the classroom. Can you see something that is about one inch wide, one inch long or one inch thick?

Introducing the Inch Estimate the length and width of your ribbon. Then, use your pattern blocks to measure the length. What would be a quicker way to measure in inches?

Introducing the Inch If we use a ruler, where does the ruler begin? The distance from 0-1 on the ruler is one inch. The distance from 1 to 2 is one inch and so on. What do you think is the distance from 0-4? Measure your ribbons with the ruler.

Work with your table group to find the length of the following objects:

3.9 Working with Inches

Working with Inches Have you seen a chart like this before? What is it used for?

Working with Inches I need two volunteers. Who is the shortest of these students? How do you know? What is the difference between their height?

Reflection Let’s determine the size of the classroom whiteboard. Think about the tools we used to measure the length of the whiteboard. Which way was easier? When we used a ruler, might we have made some mistakes?

Reflection Imagine that your inch ruler snapped. How could you use this piece of the ruler to measure the length of the pencil?
