Chernobyl: Nuclear Disasters Natalie Braverman

What happened On April 1986 there was a disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The Intense steam then spread throughout the whole core causing a steam explosion which went into the air About two to three seconds later, there was another explosion

Heath Concerns The International Conference on Occupational Radiation Protection (UNSCEAR) says by 2000, about 4000 cases of thyroid cancer had been diagnosed in exposed children. Expert Group report studies carried out on 61,000 emergency Russian workers where a total of 4995 deaths from 1991-1998. Chernobyl radiation for the rest of the Russian emergency workers 192,000 people

How it effected the Enviorment About 40% of the contaminated area was used for agriculture. Plants and animals received the highest level of radiation. The soil radiation level in the region remains high. the water supply is not nearly as contaminated as the Soil.

Now.. It has become one of Europe’s largest wildlife preserves. Local residents report lynx, wild boar, wolves, elk, deer, brown bears, bison, badgers, foxes, eagle-owls, and even Przewalski’s horse, a species supposedly extinct in the wild for some time. It is heavily wooded and free of human predators, such a flourishing of wildlife should continue. Scientists, however, are studying the area's plants and animals for long-term effects of radiation.

Still worried… That While the environment seems to have recovered, it still has to deal with long term effects (such as genetic mutations, which may happen for a few generations) and the real threat of another release of radioactivity.
