HOME Math The Children’s Garden (Math) Math in Kindergarten essentially serves to provide the foundation for higher math skills. The focus is primarily on numbers: creating the numerals, number recognition, rote counting, object counting, and knowing that a number stands for a concrete amount. Also important is knowing how to create and extend patterns as well as simple addition and subtraction. To make it easier to hone in on certain skills, all math skills are broken up by the trimester they will tested. If a certain skill is in more than one trimester, it will be listed in all trimesters they appear. The focus is primarily on letters: creating the letters, letter recognition, sound/letter relationship, sound blending, and rhyming. To make it easier to hone in on certain skills, all language arts skills are broken up by the trimester they will tested. If a certain skill is in more than one trimester, it will be listed in all trimesters they appear.

Math: Trimester 1 The Children’s Garden (Math –Trimester 1) HOMEHOME | MathMath Position WordsPosition Words Sorting Shapes Patterns Numbers 0-5SortingShapesPatternsNumbers 0-5 Position Words Students need to be able to define position words such as top/middle/bottom, before/after, inside/outside, right/left. These words are crucial in the first trimester because it will help them to follow directions much easier. For example, if the teacher is explaining the directions to a worksheet, the student must know what is meant when the teacher says, “Now look at the top of page…or see the bottom of the page.” Sample Activity Link to another online resource for this concept

Sorting Students who are able to demonstrate this skill know how to group items according to similar characteristics. For example, all objects are the same color, shape, size, weight, etc. Students need to be able explain this skill conceptually as will as use physical models to explain. 9 Shapes There are 6 basic shapes that students need to know for the district assessment. However, it is beneficial for them to know more advanced geometric and 3-dimensional shapes in order for them to begin becoming familiar with the vocabulary and what they look like. Basic Shapes Circle Square Oval Diamond Triangle Rectangle HOMEHOME | MathMath (Math – Shapes) Sample Activity Link to another online resource for this concept Other Shapes Hexagon, Pentagon, Octagon 3-D Shapes: Cylinder, Pyramid, Cone, Rectangular Prism, Cube, Sphere

Patterns A pattern is basically an arrangement of objects that follow a rule and repeat. Students need to be able to extend a pattern that has begun, or demonstrate the ability to create a pattern and explain why it is a pattern. HOMEHOME | MathMath (Math – Patterns) Pattern Example: Sample Activity Link to another online resource for this concept ? In this pattern of colors, the next color to follow would be red in order to continue.

(Math – Numbers 0 - 5) Numbers 0 - 5 In the first trimester, students need to demonstrate their understanding of numbers 0 through 5. They need to have a conceptual understanding, meaning they know that each number stands for a certain amount of objects. They need to know the concept of equal sets; that a group of 3 objects is the same amount as another group of 3 objects. Students need to understand the value of these numbers as well; that numbers closer to 0 have lesser value than numbers further along the number line. They should also know the order of the numbers and know how to write each numeral properly. 012345 HOMEHOME | MathMath Sample Activity: Number Rhymes for writing (Around the tree, around the tree, that’s how you make the number 3.)
