Volumetric analysis of the Post-Occlusion Break Response using a Conventional or Rigid aspiration line Fluid Management System (FMS) Jaime Zacharias, MD Pasteur Ophthalmic Clinic Santiago - Chile
2
This study has been partially supported by Alcon Dr Jaime Zacharias
3
Purpose To compare the post-occlusion break response of the current FMS (Alcon) and the Intrepid FMS (Alcon) using a volume-based methodology. INTREPID HIGH DUROMETER ASPIRATION TUBING Dr Jaime Zacharias
4
Method Volume fluctuations within an artificial anterior chamber were evaluated during occlusion break events in a reproducible manner. A video-photographic and a volume-sensor based measurement system were used for recording data. Aspiration line pressure, aspiration line flow, and chamber volume were monitored in real time. Peak volume fluctuation and half-volume recovery time were determined. Dr Jaime Zacharias

Conclusion The video-photographic recordings provided a calibrated visual demonstration of the differences in performance of the FMS systems analyzed. At vacuum levels of 400 mmHg both FMS showed minimal chamber volume fluctuation with the Intrepid FMS peak being almost undetectable. At higher vacuum levels, Intrepid FMS showed improved chamber stability, reducing surge nearly 50%. The half-volume recovery time was reduced by the Intrepid FMS between 20% and 40% at the vacuum levels tested. Dr Jaime Zacharias
