Problem What effect do different household items have on hair?

Introduction On shampoo and conditioner bottles, they say “Made with natural fruits and vegetables” If you think about it though, putting food in your hair sounds like it would do more damage than good. My project will test different foods to see if they actually make your hair softer.

Hypothesis I think the peanut butter will make the hair softest. There are oils in it like the others, but not enough to keep from being washed out.

Materials Blow drier Brush Towel 2 sticks butter Jar of peanut butter 2 cups vegetable oil 6 eggs Pen & Paper

Procedure Gather materials Take control – Wet all subject’s hair Dry hair Brush hair Have tester test hair Have tester rate on scale of 1-10 Put ½ cup of peanut butter in hair Rinse completely Dry hair Brush hair Have tester test hair Have tester rate on scale of 1-10 Repeat steps using oil & eggs, and butter

Major Observation

Conclusion I thought that peanut butter would make hair the softest, but I was wrong. The eggs made our hair soft, and it didn’t look oily. Also, it didn’t smell too bad. The butter didn’t work very well. It made it look oily and it stunk.

Variables Independent variable~ Household items Dependant Variables~ The hair

Possible Causes of Error When we tested oil, our hair absorbed most of it, making it hard to rate softness because it felt wet. I didn ’ t think the results were accurate so we didn ’ t use the ratings.

Further Research I would like to do the same experiment, but with skin. I could use things like mud or cucumbers or other things that are supposed to make your skin soft.

Time Spent Almost every week we had a day of science fair. We spent about 16 hours working on this.

Acknowledgements I wouldn ’ t have been able to do this project without a number of people. My “ subjects ” were super important, because they were the only people brave enough to let me put random things in their hair.
