2 I. Asian Immigrants A.Chinese 1.Although most immigration after the Civil War was from Europe, many Asian immigrants arrived each year. 2.These immigrants provoked strong reaction from natvists.

3 I. Asian Immigrants A.Chinese 3.Hoped to gain wealth and return home. 4.Railroad workers, miners, agricultural work. 5.Many hired Chinese because they would work for less and perform stoop labor. A. Stoop Labor – work white workers would not perform.

4 I. Asian Immigrants B.Exclusion 1.When a depression hit California in the late 1870’s, many began to blame the Chinese. 2.They soon became the target of hate crimes because of their cultural differences.

5 I. Asian Immigrants B.Exclusion 3. Chinese Exclusion Act – A.Prevented immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years B.Prevented Chinese who were in the country from becoming citizens. C.For the 1 st time the US had restricted immigration based on race

7 I. Asian Immigrants D.Other Asian Groups 1.For the first time the Japanese came to the US 2.The Japanese, Korean, and Filipino Immigrants leased farmland and had great success in Hawaii and on the mainland. 3.All Asians faced prejudice, hostility and discrimination.

8 I. Asian Immigrants E. The Gentlemen's Agreement 1. 1907-1908 American and Japanese Governments carried out secret negotiations through a series of notes. 2. Japanese laborers were no longer allowed to emigrate to the US.
