Decimals and Percent Grade 6

Confidential2 Convert the following fractions to percent: 1. 3/8 2. 7/12 3. 1/5 Convert the following percent to fractions: 4.70 % 5.40 % Warm up

Confidential3 Fractions are written in the form a/b, where b is not 0 The number a is called the numerator, and the number b is called the denominator Percent means parts per hundred We use the symbol % for percent. Lets recap what we learned in the last lesson

Confidential4 For converting fractions to percent Divide the numerator of the fraction by its denominator. Multiply the result by 100 and p ut the % sign. For converting percent to fractions First remove the Percent sign. Make a fraction with the percent as the numerator and 100 as the denominator and then simplify the fraction. Recap

Confidential5 Let’s start! The decimal point separates the whole units on the left from the decimal units on the right. The numbers on the left side represent whole numbers such as ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. The numbers on the right side of the point are the decimal values. Those numbers represent values called tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. What is a Decimal?

Confidential6 Example of a Decimal Number The naming difference is in the "th". Tenths are the closest value to the point. There are no "one ths”

Confidential7 Percent What is a percent? The word percent comes from the Latin phrase per centum, which means per hundred. A percent is a ratio whose second term is 100. Percent means parts per hundred. We use the symbol % for percent. Example: 38.9 %, 64 %, 80%

Confidential8 Converting decimals to percent For converting decimals to percent follow the following steps: Multiply the decimal number by 100 (for that move the decimal point two places to the right) Put the % sign at the end of the result

Confidential9 Example Convert the decimal 0.75 to percent Multiply 0.75 by 100, we will get 0.75 x 100 = 75 So, 0.75 = 75% Multiply by 100. Put % at the end.

Confidential10 Example Convert the decimal 0.875 to percent Multiply 0.875 by 100, we will get 0.875 x 100 = 87.5 So, 0.875 = 87.5% Multiply by 100. Put % at the end.

Confidential11 Converting percent to decimal For converting percent to decimals follow the following steps: First remove the Percent sign. Divide by 100 (for that move the decimal point two places to the left).

Confidential12 Example Convert the 60 % to decimal 60 (Remove the % sign) Now divide 60 by 100 and then simplify, we will get 60/ 100 = 0.60 ( move the decimal point two places to the left) So, 60 % = 0.6 Remove % sign and divide by 100

Confidential13 Example Convert the 85 % to decimal 85 (Remove the % sign) Now divide 60 by 100 and then simplify, we will get 85/ 100 = 0.85 ( move the decimal point two places to the left) So, 85 % = 0.85 Remove % sign and divide by 100.

Confidential21 Let’s Review what we have learned today The decimal point separates the whole units on the left from the decimal units on the right. The numbers on the left side represent whole numbers. The numbers on the right side of the point are the decimal values. The naming difference is in the "th“ Percent means parts per hundred. we use the symbol % for percent.

Confidential22 For converting decimals to percent Multiply the decimal by 100 and put the % sign For converting percent to decimals First remove the Percent sign. Divide by 100 Recap
