God told Elijah, the prophet, to take a message to the wicked king, Ahab.

Ahab was a wicked king who forced everyone to worship Baal, and God was not pleased with him.

Elijah went to rain for three years until he says so. and told him that it will not see King Ahab,

King Ahab became very angry with Elijah.

Elijah told King Ahab that he was breaking God’s laws and making trouble. “Let’s meet on Mount Carmel and sort this once and for all,” he told the king.

He said, “Let’s test whose god is the true god!” On the mountain, Elijah told the people that they were worshipping a false god rather than the God of heaven.

This is Baal! The false god the people worshipped! They refused to worship the God of heaven.

King Ahab went up to the mountain!

The priests were there, too!

“Let us build altars and put meat on them. You pray to Baal, and I pray to my God. The god that answers with fire, is the true god, and we must then follow him!”

The showdown began! The priests prepared the sacrifice on the altar and they all waited for Baal to send fire to burn it up. But nothing happened!

“Is he sleeping? Shout louder!” “What’s the matter?” Elijah teased.

The prophets prayed, danced and shouted. They even cut themselves, but still nothing happened!

“OK then, it’s my turn!” said Elijah.

He dug a huge trench around it. Elijah took 12 stones to build the altar.

He asked the priests to pour water over it.

They poured buckets of water on to the altar.

Then Elijah prayed to God.

And fire came down!

The people were all surprised!

“He is the true God!” “Praise the God of heaven!” Elijah shouted.
