2. Tsunami Analysis The Tsunami was caused by a 9.0 earthquake in the Indian Ocean. When two tectonic plates under the ocean floor hit or scrape over each other, tsunami waves are created. These waves can travel at 500 miles an hour all the way to the main land. When they reach land, they have lost little energy, but increased in height. This creates 20 foot waves that crash into the main land with huge amounts of energy.

3. Tsunami Analysis The storm surge destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in the affected areas. These homes were completely destroyed by the storm surge.

4. Tsunami Analysis The people had no warning that the Tsunami was coming. They were hit straight on without time to prepare. These people were playing in the surf, or looking on, seconds before this wave hit. Many did not realize the danger they were putting themselves in.

5. Tsunami Relief When a Tsunami hits, the people are thrown into chaos. Complete coastal towns can be destroyed in minutes. And the storm surge destroys all infrastructure making it nearly impossible to travel, find food, water and other basic necessities. Families and friends are seperated, or killed, making this time even more stressful for the affected people.

6. Tsunami Relief The people in the affected areas need to be relocated for their own safety Teams need to be established to search for missing people in the ruins

7. Tsunami Relief Food, water, medical aid and clothing needs to be provided to the people in the areas affected. These same necessities also need to be given to the people after they are relocated.

8. Tsunami Relief Charities and fundraisers should be set up in more affluent countries to raise money for the affected countries. This money would initially go to helping the people with basic needs, and later to rebuilding the damaged villages.

11. Sea Wall In more affluent areas of Japan, the government can build sea walls to stop waves. These large walls are important because they can slow down large tidal waves and protect people or property.

12. Relief Programs Before a Tsunami, there should be programs set up to help with the aftermath. After a Tsunami people are in desperate need of water, food, clothing, and shelter. If there are programs available to help provide the people with these basic needs then people will be safer after a Tsunami.

14. Alarm System An alarm system is vital in the event of a tsunami. If people have warning they can try and evacuate. People who are away from the ocean are less affected, and less likely to be injured or killed.

15. Tsunami Drill If Tsunami Drill’s are practiced, people will be more prepared for a real Tsunami. Children would know where to go, and wouldn’t get lost during the real thing. Although the drill wouldn’t protect the people, at least there would be a plan in place to help. In areas that can’t afford high-tech help, the drill would educated people on procedure in the event of a Tsunami.
